Kavli ITS Annual Meeting in 2018

Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences (Kavli ITS) at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) held its 2018 Annual Meeting at UCAS Zhong-Guan-Cun campus. The meeting was hosted by Prof. Fu-Chun Zhang, Director of Kavli ITS. Dr. Christopher Martin, the Interim Vice President of Science Programs of the Kavli Foundation (USA), Prof. Gang Su (Vice President of UCAS and Associate Director of Kavli ITS), Prof. Xiao-Song Chen (Associate Director of Kavli ITS and former Associate Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, CAS), Prof. Jiang-Ping Hu (Assistant Director of Kavli ITS and Deputy Director of Institute of Physics, CAS), members of Kavli ITS Scientific Advisory Committee including Prof. Zhong Fang (IoP, CAS), Prof. Tao Xiang (Academician at IoP, CAS) and other invited guests have also attended the meeting.

 

Prof. Fu-Chun Zhang first gave his warm welcome to all the participants at the opening ceremony. Fu-Chun Zhang acknowledged the UCAS, CAS and Kavli Foundation for their constant support to Kavli ITS. In his speech Fu-Chun Zhang then introduced the Kavli ITS and the highlights including international workshops and collaborations in the last year, and then brought up the challenges for Kavli ITS such as recruiting first class seniors and faculty members.

Prof. Gang Su, on behalf of UCAS, spoke highly of the past performance of Kavli ITS and also expressed his personal appreciation in witnessing the rapid growth of Kavli ITS. Gang Su stated that UCAS will continue to support Kavli ITS and gave his best wishes that Kavli ITS can receive further assistances and supports from other collaborators and sister institutes.

Academician Tao Xiang also summarized on the past Kavli ITS workshops and emphasized on their continuous influences such as bridging the talents and build collaborative relationships. Tao Xiang then expressed his expectations in seeing more successful international workshops in Kavli ITS. Prof. Jiang-Ping Hu also introduced the collaborative relationships between IoP, CAS and Kavli ITS.

Prof. Sadamichi Maekawa (Visiting Chair Professor of Kavli ITS, Senior Advisor at RIKEN, CEMS, Japan) demonstrated the collaborations between Kavli ITS and RIKEN. Prof. Zheng-Yu Weng (Tsinghua) introduced the Institute of Advanced Studies at Tsinghua University (IASTU) and Prof. Xiao-Qun Wang (Shanghai Jiaotong University) also introduced Wilczek Quantum Center and its collaboration with Kavli ITS.

Dr. Christopher Martin introduced the Kavli Foundation at the meeting. He expressed his great gratification in seeing the growth of Kavli Institutes in China and other countries, and show his heartful gratitude to all the organizations and individuals that have contributed to the development of Kavli ITS. Christopher Martin particularly introduced Fred Kavli, the founder of Kavli Foundation and expressed his great joy to fulfill Fred’s dream to see that science researches are fast progressing not only in the U.S., but all over the world.
