Stochastic Density Functional Theory for Electrolytes Out of Equilibrium (Mar. 26, 2018)

Abstract:

The dynamics of interacting Brownian particles can be described by a stochastic equation for the density field. I will show how the linearised version of this equation can be used to recover, very simply, certain of Onsager’s results on electrolyte conductivity. In addition I will show how it can analyze the out of equilibrium thermal Casimir effect between parallel plates containing Brownian charges, in particular the case where the plates are held at different temperatures and when an electric field drives a current in one of the plates.

About the Speaker:

Prof. David S. DEAN is Professor of Statistical Physics at the University of Bordeaux. He studied for his undergraduate and PhD degrees at the University of Cambridge and was the recipient of the Rayleigh Prize, University of Cambridge in 1992. He was a junior member of the Institute Universitaire de France from 2007-2012 and was the President of the Scientific Programme Committee of the Institute Henri Poincaré (Paris) from 2011-15. Since December 2011 he is Professor of Statistical Physics in Laboratoire Ondes et Matière d'Aquitaine at Univerisity of Bordeaux.
