Abstract:
Every 4d N=2 superconformal field theory (SCFT) contains a protected subsector isomorphic to a 2d vertex operator algebra (VOA), whose elements are referred to as the Schur operators. In this talk, we will derive this structure from supersymmetric localization, and extract from it a topological algebra which is then matched with the deformation quantization associated to the 3d SCFT from dimensional reduction. Motivated by simple Gukov-Witten-type surface defects, we discuss the structural information of the VOAs hidden in the integrands that integrate to the 4d N=4 Schur indices.
