Abstract: The ideas of symmetries and effective field theories (EFTs) have been widely used to study bulk fluid flows. In this talk, I will extend these ideas to a classical challenging mathematical problem: free-surface water waves. I will show that the surface displacement and the velocity potential can be interpreted as Goldstone modes arising from the spontaneous breaking of vertical translations and Galilean boosts symmetries. I will then discuss the resulting conservation laws for surface-wave dynamics and outline potential applications to real-world ocean waves.
