About the Speaker: 

Prof. Thors Hans Hansson is in the Theory of Quantum Matter research group which is part of the Condensed Matter and Quantum Optics section at Fysikum, Stockholm University.He is also one of the members of Nobel Prize Committee.

 

Prof. Hansson graduated from the University of Gothenburgh in 1979, but did his Ph.D. work at the Rutherford laboratory in the UK. Before moving to Stockholm in 1988, he was a fellow at Nordita in Copenhagen, a postdoc at MIT, a fellow at CERN and an assistant professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

 

About the talk:

The lecture will describe the scientific background to  this years Nobel Prize in physics, and comment on the very recent observation of a merger of two neutron stars.  The nomination and selection processes for Nobel Prizes will be presented.
