  • Published: 2019-06-25

The meeting with the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University was a first step towards future collaborations between the two Kavli institutes in Beijing. During the meeting, professor Gregory. Herczeg, the associate Director of Science at the KIAA, started by giving an overview of the institute. After that, three faculty members from the KIAA including professors Xian Chen, Lijing Shao, and Zhuo Li, gave a short presentation each about the researches they focus on. In the second part, the Director of the Kavli ITS, professor Fuchun Zhang, introduced the current status of the institute, which was also followed by two short research presentations by professor Mamoru Matsuo, a current Kavli ITS faculty and Dr Huajia Wang, an incoming Kavli ITS faculty.

During the meeting, the KIAA shared with the Kavli ITS many insights and experiences in nurturing and running a center for world-class researches and international collaborations in Beijing. After the meeting, faculty members from both institutes held lively informal discussions and found many mutual interests, e.g. from the gravitational wave echos in black hole astrophysics to the idea of studying quantum black holes using AdS/CFT, out of which further discussions and collaborations are suggested. At the organizational level, the two Kavli institutes also discussed future opportunities in recruitment collaborations, e.g. in the field of astroparticle physics.
